IVRLA is pleased to announce that 17 of our collections are available through Europeana.

Europeana is a Thematic Network funded by the European Commission under the eContentplus programme, as part of the i2010 policy. Originally known as the European digital library network – EDLnet – it is a partnership of 100 representatives of heritage and knowledge organisations and IT experts from throughout Europe. They contribute to the Work Packages that are solving the technical and usability issues.

The project is run by a core team based in the national library of the Netherlands, the Koninklijke Bibliotheek. It builds on the project management and technical expertise developed by The European Library, which is a service of the Conference of European National Librarians. The IVRLA has entered a very exciting, yet uncertain, period in its project life-cycle. The core collections are almost complete. New research collections are being generated. And much brain-power is being harvested for the last leg of the project.

Final completion date of IVRLA 1.0: 31st December 2009

Potentially this month we'll be launching up to 6 new core collections. Stay tuned.

We're developing an exciting new research area with 15 show-case research projects and we'll have more information about these new projects on the information website shortly.

There will be a series of IVRLA events over the coming weeks. More details to follow.

And the IVRLA will be changing its look before the end of the year - exciting times ahead.

Check out the repository for new collections - UCD Ephemera Collection, Papers of Michael Collins, and Folklore Photograph Collection have all been added since the last post.

And a very warm, albeit belated, welcome to Dr Dervila Layden (Research Coordinator), Katie Moten (Digitisation Assistant) and Joe Lakes (IT Support) who have recently joined the team.

The IVRLA has been incredibly busy since the last update, with many staff changes and some new collections online. A lot of exciting developments have been going on behind the scenes and we hope to share some of that with you over the coming months.

Staff changes
We'd like to wish a fond farewell to Adele Cocchiglia (cataloguer), Christoph Schmidt-Supprian (cataloguer) and Ranju Upadhyay (IT) who left us in 2008. And we'd like to extend a warm well to Alan Leary (IT), Antoinette Doran (cataloguer) and Robert McEvoy (cataloguer) who have joined us over the past year.

We will be launching the UCD Ephemera Collection from Special Collections, UCD Library, on Friday 7th August 2009. Stay tuned for this beautiful new collection.

Transformations: How Research is Changing Ireland

The IVRLA would like to invite all members of the public to visit the IVRLA exhibition stand and meet with staff members and view the repository in action in the Science Gallery, Trinity College Dublin, from Thursday 27th November 2008 until Tuesday 2nd December 2008.

The Transformations Exhibition is part of the PRTLI 10 celebrations and book launch, which mark the 10th anniversary of the PRTLI funding initiative.

The Exhibition area will be open at the following times:

IVRLA, PRTLI 10 and the UCD Research Trail

The Irish Virtual Research Library & Archive (IVRLA) would like to invite UCD staff, students, and other interested members to visit the IVRLA Roadshow on Level 2 of the James Joyce Library. We will be around the corner from the Level 2 Information Desk on Friday afternoon, 14th of November until the 21st of November 2008.

The Roadshow is part of the UCD Research Trail, which aims to show-case the PRTLI-funded projects in UCD, in the run up to the 10th Anniversary celebrations of the PRTLI(Programme for Research in Third-Level Institutions), which will begin on November 27th in the Science Gallery in Trinity College, Dublin.

Please feel free to talk to staff about the project, take a leaflet and postcard, and to request a brief demonstration. Please note that the Roadshow may not be attended at all times, but we will leave a schedule of when we will be available.

All are very welcome.

IVRLA Updates

A few staff changes to announce this year.

Joseph Greene (metadata librarian) left the IVRLA and took up a new position in UCD Library in January 2008, and the IVRLA Project recruited two new metadata librarians in April 2008. Our two newbies are Daniel Montes, transferring from UCD Library, and Christoph Schmidt-Supprian, transferring from TCD Library. Welcome to both, and best of luck to Joseph!

We would also like to extend our best wishes to John McDonough, former IVRLA project manager, who took up his new position in the Oireachtas Library this month. Best of luck to John!

Technology of Data: Collection, Communication, Access and Preservation

The 34th International Association for Social Science Information Services and Technology (IASSIST) annual conference will be held at the Stanford University, Palo Alto, California, USA, May 27-30, 2008. This year's conference, Technology of Data: Collection, Communication, Access and Preservation, examines the role of technology and tools in various aspects of the data life cycle.

The theme of this conference addresses how technology can affect aspects of data stewardship throughout the data lifecycle. The methods and media by which data are collected, shared, analyzed and saved are ever-changing, from punch cards and legal pads to online-surveys and tag clouds. There has been an explosion of data sources and topics; vast changes in compilation and dissemination methods; increasing awareness about access and associated licensing and privacy issues; and growing concern about the safeguarding and protection of valuable data resources for future use. The 2008 conference is an opportunity to discuss the role of technology – past, present, and future – in all of these arenas. We seek submissions of papers, poster/demonstration sessions, and panel sessions on the following topics:

* Issues and techniques for preserving "old" data as well as
information "born digital"
* Methods, technology and questions surrounding data dissemination,
including best practices and innovations
* Archival and preservation challenges presented by new processes
* Metadata
* Innovation in the use of data for teaching and research
* The legal issues surrounding new technologies
* Changes in resource discovery methods
* Data services in virtual spaces
* Providing services to users with different degrees of technical
"savvy"
* Tools and spaces for research collaboration

Launch of IVRLA 1.0

Monday September 17th saw the launch of the Irish Virtual Research Library and Archive repository (IVRLA), a key component in humanities research infrastructure for University College Dublin (UCD) and other third level institutions.

IVRLA is a digital archive containing a number of digitised collections from UCD’s holdings, of use and interest to Irish humanities researchers. The IVRLA has developed a sophisticated interface enabling users to browse, search, tag and cite digital objects and view or download them in a variety of file formats. This interface sits on top of an open source repository architecture that functions as the IVRLA’s base content store. An elaborate collection model has been developed ensuring all content is viewed within context and structure. This model is particularly suited for organic primary source collections and enables hierarchy and sub-division in how objects are arranged and held within collections.

Welcome to Year 3 of the IVRLA Project.

To date we now have 2 cataloguers, 3 digitisation assistants(including the new audio/video digitisation assistant) and an IT specialist.

An online demo is also now available here, with basic browse functionality.

The IVRLA Workbook is also available here, giving an overview into the inner workings of this digitisation project.

There will be a lot of exciting developments this year, so keep an eye on this blog or on the IVRLA website.

Well, although this site is a bit bare, we hope to start putting some more stuff up soon. The digital assistants interviews are being scheduled and the cataloguers and IT specialist closing dates are next week. The scanner and workstation have arrived and are being installed.
